The audit was conducted from 17 to 21 August 2026.

Objective

The objective of the audit was to examine how COSL and Vår Energi map and follow up issues relating to health, safety and the environment and comply with regulatory requirements relating to risk assessment, implementation and use of automated drilling operations.

The audit emphasised decision support, criteria and processes, including risk assessments and analyses established and implemented to safeguard well control and and working environment factors, and ensure robust operations from a holistic HTO perspective.

We examined how new technology was being applied in drilling and well operations, and what HSE implications this entailed. We also gathered information on how the individuals involved monitored the systems during operation and how the systems were managed in the event of a technical failure.

We also sought to obtain a better understanding of how the implementation of the new technologies had changed work tasks and processes, and how those involved had been enabled to carry out the new work processes.

Result

The audit identified four non-conformities and one improvement point.

Non-conformity:

  • Deficiencies in analyses
  • Deficiencies in work processes and procedures
  • Inadequate follow-up of the supervisory responsibility
  • Insufficient involvement and employee participation

Improvement point:

  • Inadequate training and preparation

What happens now?

Havtil has asked Vår Energi and COSL to report by 21 October 2026 on how the non-conformities will be addressed, and to give us their assessment of the improvement point that was observed.
