A flowing CO₂ well operates under different parameters and conditions during kill operations, intervention and wellhead capping, than a conventional flowing oil and gas well.
The Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority (Havtil) has observed that there is uncertainty in the industry around well kills in CO₂ storage reservoirs, and has therefore seen a need to survey the scope and challenges of intervening on, killing and/or capping a flowing CO₂ well.
On commission from Havtil, Superior Wild Well Energy Services has produced a report that maps different scenarios that may arise during intervention on a high-concentration CO₂ blowout, and assessments that must be made to safely regain control of the well.
The report also contains a summary of modelling tools for well control with regard to the CO₂ scenario.
