The cutting of a casing on the Troll field on 23 September 2025 resulted in an uncontrolled flow of gas and fluid onto the drill floor. The incident had major accident potential. We have produced a video presenting the sequence of events and the key learning points from the investigation.

Supervision covers all the activities which allow us to assess whether the companies are pursuing their operations prudently and in accordance with the regulations, and to follow this up.

More than 2 200 oil and gas wells are to be found on the Norwegian continental shelf. In 2024, more than 20% of these wells were temporary plugged and abandoned wells. Downhole barriers in temporary plugged and abandoned wells are not qualified to last for ever. That makes it important to follow up and ensure they are not abandoned beyond the lifespan of the barriers which secure them.

In January 2023, there was a serious work accident at Equinor’s Mongstad facility. While installing frame scaffolding, a scaffolder fell 23.5 metres onto a concrete floor and was severely injured. The video of Havtil's investigation of the incident is now available with Polish subtitles.

Approximately 2200 oil and gas wells on the Norwegian continental shelf fall within the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authoritys’s area of responsibility. All present and future wells will sooner or later be plugged and abandoned with an eternal perspective. The updated animation show the principles for permanent plugging and abandonment and visualize how well barriers are established. Our goal is that all wells will be permanent plugged and abandoned in a robust and efficient manner for perpentuity.
