A good working environment requires an understanding of the correlations between work, health and risk. Basing measures on research-based knowledge and the systematic use of data makes it easier to take a preventive and targeted approach.

The authorities have clear expectations regarding companies’ efforts in the areas of health, safety and the environment. A key element of this work is having a knowledge base that makes it possible to identify working environment challenges, assess risks and implement appropriate measures.

Research and available tools

STAMI – the National Institute of Occupational Health – is a key provider of knowledge in the field of occupational health and safety, and develops research, statistics and tools that are available to both businesses and government agencies. Among these are National Occupational Health Surveillance (NOA), which provides an overview of working conditions and health effects in various industries , and En bra dag på jobb (A Good Day at Work) (In Norwegian only), a tool which facilitates dialogue and participation in occupational health and safety activities.

Such tools can help strengthen the companies’ risk assessment and prevention efforts and provide a better foundation for systematically addressing working environment challenges.

As part of its outreach efforts, STAMI also offers courses that address how research-based tools can be used in day-to-day occupational health and safety work. A course on this topic is be held in Stavanger on 9 June (In Norwegian only).
