From 24 August to 21 September 2017, we carried out an audit of Aker BP's management of risk and barriers in Tambar's operational organisation.


The objective of the audit was to assess how Aker BP is ensuring compliance with the authorities' regulations, recognised standards and its own risk and barrier management requirements for the operation and maintenance of Tambar.

Our particular interests were:

- How Aker BP is addressing the preconditions communicated in connection with the application for consent to use Tambar beyond its planned operating life.

- How changes ensuing from the merger of Det norske and BP Norge are affecting risk and barrier management at Tambar.


The result is based on our assessment of presentations Aker BP made during the audit, a review of documentation, discussions with selected personnel and the safety delegate service on board Tambar, and spot-checks in the maintenance management system.

The audit identified three regulatory non-conformities. These were in the following areas:

System for barrier management at Tambar
Facility-specific information for handling failure, hazard and accident situations
Contingency plan
One improvement point was also identified relating to the company's processes for risk management.

We have asked Aker BP for feedback by 4 December 2017 concerning how they are addressing these non-conformities.


Tambar is a field in the southern part of the Norwegian sector in the North Sea, 16 kilometres southeast of the Ula field. The water depth is 68 metres. Tambar was discovered in 1983, and the plan for development and operation (PDO) was approved in 2000. The field has been developed with a remotely controlled wellhead facility without processing equipment. Production started in 2001.
