Objective

The objective of the report is to help strengthen the industry’s expertise and awareness concerning the monitoring and improvement of alarm systems and operators’ working conditions.

Background

In recent years, Havtil has monitored alarm systems on offshore and onshore facilities, and audits of driller’s cabins show that some companies lack the necessary systems to ensure proper alarm management. Documentation and meetings in connection with the audit revealed deficiencies in alarm analysis tools, alarm philosophy, operational performance requirements and maintenance programmes. Several companies had high alarm rates and a large number of standing alarms, which can impair operators’ ability to detect and handle unforeseen situations.

The audit also shows that several companies have not carried out adequate analyses of the workload in the driller’s cabin, and that the information gathered from various assessments is rarely used to improve operational and organisational conditions.

Each drilling contractor has received a separate audit report with detailed observations. The reports are available at havtil.no.
