In 2022-2023, Havtil carried out a project in collaboration with the National Institute of Occupational Health (STAMI) to increase the level of knowledge about diesel exhaust exposure in the petroleum industry. In this connection, information was obtained from the companies about challenges relating to diesel exhaust and their risk management practices.

The project resulted in a knowledge report on diesel exhaust as a working environment factor in the petroleum industry.

The project showed that diesel exhaust poses a significant working environment challenge in the petroleum industry, and that a wide range of workers are affected.

The report pointed to key knowledge gaps and deficiencies in risk management at industry level, mainly related to lack of knowledge about elemental carbon (EC) exposure levels. The extent of occupational hygiene measurements of elemental carbon taken in the petroleum industry was limited.

In 2023, the project was mainly aimed at increased knowledge through occupational hygiene measurements of elemental carbon in the industry. On this basis, STAMI reviewed data from EC measurements in EXPO, the national database for airborne exposures in Norwegian workplaces. The data gathered have been compiled and presented in the appended knowledge report on diesel exhaust as an occupational health factor in the petroleum industry.

The knowledge report was also presented at our webinar on carcinogenic chemicals on Friday, 7 June 2024.

The report is available in Norwegian only.
