Incidents involving DP have major accident potential. From 2014 to 2018, 16 incidents with loss of position were reported. This, along with the increased use of batteries as an energy source during DP operations, has highlighted and increased the significance of determining and being aware of the time required to terminate a DP operation in a safe manner.
On behalf of the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway, DNV GL has prepared a report describing safety aspects of terminating DP operations. This provides a background to requirements and examples of the method for determining the operation’s “time to terminate” in a safe manner.
The report also describes how barriers can be used to manage risks in DP operations.
The report is in English and contributes to the industry’s efforts in this area. It is designed to be used by both management and technical/operational personnel.
