The workplace is very important for mental health. We often hear that “work is the best medicine”, but that is not always the case. A good working environment fosters security, coping abilities and a sense of belonging, while a poor working environment can cause unhealthy stress, unhappiness and psychological problems.

Sickness absence linked to mental health issues is on the rise, especially among young people, and this may often be connected to conditions at work.

For World Mental Health Day, we encourage companies to ask themselves the following questions:

  • Are you in control of the risk factors in your working environment that may cause work-related mental health problems or affect safety?
  • How do you systematically work to reduce this risk, as you do with other HSE risk factors?
