This year's meeting in  St. John's, Canada, on 6 to 10 October, was attended by eleven IRF members. Through this cooperation, regulators from around the world share experiences with the aim of improving safety in the industry.

Common challenges

“Many of the challenges are the same, regardless of the sea area being regulated. We face the same technological complexity, operational risks and need for robust safety systems. By working together and learning from each other’s experiences, we can improve our own regulatory and supervisory work,” says Havtil’s Director General Sigve Knudsen.

“The IRF has defined so-called ‘opportunity statements’ – areas where the industry is challenged to become even better. This is where we can benefit from good international cooperation between authorities, on, for example, well control, learning, digitalisation and removal.

Artificial intelligence and ICT security

Havtil's perspectives were highlighted in the discussions, with a particular focus on new technology.  Among other things, Havtil presented a regulatory framework for artificial intelligence and shared its methodology for auditing ICT security systems.

Conference

The IRF Offshore Safety Conference, which assembled close to 300 participants, brought the event to its conclusion. The conference emphasized the importance of innovation in order to meet future challenges in offshore energy production, while ensuring safety.

What is the International Regulators' Forum?

The IRF was established in 1994 by a group of authorities who wanted to promote a common understanding of safety, health and environmental issues. The forum facilitates the exchange of ideas and views about methods and principles for the effective supervision of safety and the working environment. Havtil is a member of the IRF.

The members exchange details of their supervisory activities and notify each other of relevant technical issues, progress in regulation and so forth. Find out more on the IRF’s website
