Renewable energy production
Knowledge and expertise from the petroleum industry are important in work for the energy transition and for building up renewable energy production, such as offshore wind power.
Since 2020, we have had regulatory authority for renewable energy production at sea. Offshore wind power has many similarities with petroleum activities, and we will ensure that safety in this new sector is taken good care of through effective regulation and supervision.
Oil and gas
Oil and gas production has been pursued on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) for just over 50 years. At present, 94 fields are on stream and the industry still has many years ahead of it.
We have regulatory responsibility for safety, the working environment, emergency preparedness and security in the petroleum sector. This covers establishing regulations and supervising that the companies conduct their activities in a prudent manner.
Seabed minerals
We were given regulatory responsibility in 2022 for safety and emergency preparedness in recovering seabed minerals from the NCS, which could become a big industry in the future. Technology and expertise from the petroleum sector are being applied today in the work of mapping mineral resources on the seabed.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS)
CCS is an important measure for reducing global greenhouse-gas emissions. Norway has been working over several years to realise a cost-effective solution for full-scale CO₂ handling. Storing this gas beneath the bed of the North Sea could be crucial for reaching the climate targets.
Since 2018, we have had regulatory responsibility for safety and the working environment related to transport and injection of CO₂.
