The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway is the market supervisory authority responsible for regulations that implement harmonised product directives such as the ATEX Directive. The Regulations relating to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive areas also apply to petroleum activities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, with the exception of products intended for use on mobile facilities.

Market supervision

Market supervision is an obligation incumbent on the national authorities to monitor products made available in Norway. Market supervision is conducted by proactive or reactive means that entail checking that products meet applicable safety requirements.

Proactive market supervision is a planned approach by which we investigate whether products placed on the market comply with the product regulations. Reactive market supervision is conducted primarily on the basis of incidents or suspicions that the product fails to meet the legal requirements.

Letter to market participants

As part of our market supervision activities and in collaboration with the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority and the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection, we have written a letter concerning the lack of permanent marking of equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX products) addressed to the market participants (producers, representatives, importers and distributors of ATEX products).
