This incident occurred in connection with skidding the derrick on the Gyda facility, when a side plate came loose from the skid jack.
Two people were in the area this object dropped to. Neither are understood to have been hit by the plate, but one was injured when he backed away and fell to another deck about 1.5 metres below.
An investigation team comprising PSA personnel is now starting work.
The police have been informed that the incident has occurred and that the PSA has launched an investigation.
The main objective of the investigation is to identify the causes of the incident and possible lessons to be learnt, and to share this information with the industry.
In conducting its investigation, the PSA will
- carefully review the course of events
- uncover and describe the actual and potential consequences of the incident
- identify direct and underlying causes
- apply necessary enforcement powers to correct possible regulatory breaches
- make public its findings
- contribute to experience transfer to and learning by other players in the petroleum sector.
The investigation will be summed up in a report published on psa.no.
Gyda
Gyda is a field in the southern part of the Norwegian sector in the North Sea, between the Ula and Ekofisk fields. The water depth is 66 metres. Gyda was discovered in 1980, and the plan for development and operation (PDO) was approved in 1987. The field has been developed with a combined drilling, accommodation and processing facility with a steel jacket. Production started in 1990 and ceased in 2020. The facility was removed in 2022.
