The audit was conducted between 4 and 7 May 2020, with a focus on the management of stability, watertight and weatherproof integrity, ballast systems and wave-in-deck events in respect of Transocean Arctic.

Objective

The objective of the audit was to verify through discussions and verifications that Transocean’s management of stability, watertight and weatherproof integrity, ballast systems and wave-in-deck events complied with relevant regulations.

Result

10 non-conformities were identified in connection with:

  • Access for personnel through watertight barriers
  • Mechanical locking system
  • Individual alarms for watertight sliding doors
  • Common breaker for HVAC valves
  • Remote shut-off system for HVAC valves
  • Power supply from main switchboard
  • Indication of ballast valves’ position
  • Accidental opening of ballast valves
  • Operations during ballasting
  • Freeboard plan

11 improvement points were identified concerning:

  • Recovery after damage
  • Load securing
  • KG limit curves
  • Test and maintenance routines
  • Watertight hinged closures
  • Indicator for watertight sliding doors
  • Position indicator for ballast valves
  • Local labelling of ballast valves
  • Communication system
  • Appendix to the class certificate
  • Limit curves for waves in deck

What happens now?

We have asked Transocean to report on how the non-conformities will be addressed, and for their assessment of the improvement points observed. The reply deadline is set at 23 June 2020.
